Papers, 1892-1898, 1892-1895.

This collection consists of personal papers of the young Lewis Rutter, dating from approximately the time he came to Spokane at about age 25. The bulk is correspondence, including copies of telegrams. The majority is dated 1892 and gives an insight to the variety of financial ventures with which he was involved. There is nothing from the years 1893 and 1894, and the remainder of the correspondence is from 1895. The rest of the collection consists of personal financial records, from the years 1892-1895.

Mr. Rutter was an early Spokane businessman and banker. Born in Philadelphia and educated at the University of Pennsylvania, he first came to the west as a representative of a Philadelphia wool broker after graduation. By 1894, Mr. Rutter had joined the Spokane and Eastern Trust Co. He became president of the bank in 1916 and remained in that capacity until retirement in 1931.
